Pretty well done.
There are a lot of open source operating systems on the web available for download and more are coming constantly. They all pretty much follow the same formula, mainly just differing in the GUI and software bundles. Unfortunately, more often than not, the releases don’t work or are terribly crap to use.
I came across gOS. From what I gather, it’s built on Ubuntu but has a slight edge that makes it very fast and light — all the software used is mainly online.
We’re creating an OS ecosystem that is complete. We come with all the software you need to browse the web, email, instant message… play movies, music, and connect to iPods… create and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, images… out of the box. Plug and play!
We recommend Google for just about everything… Gmail, Gtalk, Calendar, Maps, Docs and Spreadsheets, and more. We’d like to welcome you to the idea that Google already is your “operating system.”
I’ll be trying it out soon on an old PC, and since I use Gmail and the Google Calendar quite often, it’ll be an interesting experiment.
EDIT: Saying that installing gOS was going to be interesting was pretty much spot on. For some unknown reason the setup doesn’t allow you to specify a root password so you need to SUDO it later. Talk about annoying. And it also seems that gOS is meant for newer PCs since the OS doesn’t allow me to install new applications, saying that “either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your your computer type” — and this a warning from wanting to install the Terminal :)
Doesn’t look promising…
