Vimeo

I handle quite a lot of media on my Mac — everything from photos to video. For photos and pictures I use Flickr, wouldn’t have it any other way. But for videos, there’s a real problem. YouTube is a very easy place to upload stuff to but the privacy features are pretty non-existant; not that I’d post anything extremely private. But I just want to have the opportunity to choose who seems my videos.

I came across Vimeo quite a while ago but since I don’t really take or upload videos onto the web, join said site didn’t seem to be an issue. As I wrote some time ago, I got a R/C Battletank with the copy of Halo 3 I purchased. So in order to show it off to some friends, I posted a mp4-video that I uploaded onto my site and then embedded it into the post. Works in theory, but the problem with uploading different types of media onto your own site is, that people viewing the media might not have the necessary codecs/players/whatnot.

So as I’m a member of Vimeo, just like with YouTube, I can upload the video of the toy tank to their site (they give me 500MB of space per month, for free) and embed a flash-based player onto a post. Excellent. Vimeo also supports HD-quality videos. Nice.

But don’t worry guys, I won’t start video blogging. I’ll stick sharp metal objects into my eyes before that happens.
